USWNT co-captain Lindsey Horan expresses frustration with the soccer knowledge of American fans, noting a growing understanding but pointing out misconceptions.
United States Women’s National Soccer Team co-captain Lindsey Horan voices her frustration with the soccer knowledge of American fans, saying, ‘Most American soccer fans aren’t smart.’
“American soccer fans, most of them aren’t smart. They don’t know the game. They don’t understand. [But] it’s getting better and better,” says USWNT co-captain Lindsey Horan. She has been wearing the captain’s armband for the national team since 2023, sharing the leadership role with Alex Morgan when they play together.
“I’m going to piss off some people, but the game is growing in the US. People are more and more knowledgeable, but so much of the time people take what the commentators say, right? My mom does it! My mom says, ‘[Commentator and former USWNT player] Julie Foudy said you had such a good game!’ And I’m here just going, ‘I was fucking shit today.’” – USWNT co-captain Lindsey Horan.
The USWNT faced criticism following their disappointing performance at the 2023 World Cup, where they were eliminated by Sweden in a penalty shootout during the round of 16. Vlatko Andonovski resigned as the national team coach after the tournament, and Emma Hayes, the current Chelsea manager, is set to take over the role at the end of the Women’s Super League season in England.
USWNT co-captain Lindsey Horan expressed feeling hurt by the negative media attention the team received during the 2023 World Cup.
Horan defended her team, emphasizing that critics don’t understand the hard work put in behind the scenes, particularly mentioning Carli Lloyd’s comments on Fox Sports, where she referred to the team as “arrogant” after they barely advanced from the group stage.
Lindsey Horan, co-captain of the United States Women’s National Soccer Team (USWNT), acknowledged the pressure and expectations faced by the team, stating that critics will talk negatively if the on-field performance doesn’t back it up. Horan emphasized the competitive nature of being part of the national team and the challenges that come with it.
Lindsey Horan, who plays for Lyon in France in addition to her role in the USWNT, expressed that fans in France seem to have a better understanding and appreciation of her style of play and football in general.
Lindsey Horan praised the French culture, emphasizing that football is widely watched and understood in France. She remains optimistic about the USWNT’s chances in the upcoming Paris Olympics, acknowledging the team’s transition with younger players and a focus on combining physicality with creativity and accuracy in their attack.
