Bombay High Court Dismisses Kangana Ranaut’s Petition for Stay in Javed Akhtar Defamation Case.

The Bombay High Court dismissed a petition filed by actor Kangana Ranaut, wherein she sought a stay on the trial related to a defamation complaint filed against her by lyricist Javed Akhtar. The defamation case was initiated by Javed Akhtar in 2020.

Kangana also requested the court to consolidate this case with the cross-complaint she filed against Javed Akhtar. However, the court rejected Kangana’s plea, indicating that the trial in the defamation case will proceed separately from her cross-complaint.

The Bombay High Court, through Justice Prakash Naik, issued an order stating that the proceedings could not be stayed or consolidated. The court highlighted that Kangana Ranaut had not previously argued that the cases were cross-cases. Moreover, considering Javed Akhtar’s complaint was filed first, the court stated, “At this stage, the relief sought in the petition cannot be granted.” The judgment implies that Kangana’s request to halt the proceedings or combine the cases was not accepted by the court.

The legal battle between Kangana Ranaut and Javed Akhtar involves an ongoing defamation case filed by Javed Akhtar against Kangana Ranaut, which is being heard before the Magistrate in Andheri. Simultaneously, Kangana’s complaint against Javed Akhtar was put on hold by the Sessions Court.

Kangana, in her writ petition, argued that both cases originated from a meeting in 2016, contending that they should be tried together. However, the court has not accepted this argument, and the two cases are proceeding separately.

In 2020, Javed Akhtar filed a complaint against Kangana Ranaut following an interview where she accused him of threatening her. Kangana claimed that Javed Akhtar had summoned her to his home during her public dispute with Hrithik Roshan over their alleged affair. The legal proceedings related to this defamation complaint are currently ongoing in the Magistrate’s court in Andheri.

In response to Javed Akhtar’s defamation complaint, Kangana Ranaut filed a counter complaint against him for alleged “extortion and criminal intimidation.” She claimed that Javed Akhtar had called her and her sister Rangoli to his house with “malafide intentions and ulterior motives” after her public dispute with Hrithik Roshan. In her complaint, Kangana accused Javed Akhtar of criminally intimidating and threatening her.
