Devdutt Padikkal Substitutes for Ravichandran Ashwin as Fielder in India vs England 3rd Test.

In cricket, teams are allowed to have substitute fielders who can temporarily replace players due to injury, tactical reasons, or other factors. In the case of the India vs England 3rd Test, Ravichandran Ashwin was replaced by Devdutt Padikkal on Day 3, but only as a substitute fielder. This means that Padikkal took Ashwin’s position on the field but was not allowed to bat or bowl.

According to the MCC (Marylebone Cricket Club) playing conditions, substitute fielders are restricted from captaining the team or bowling, although they may be permitted to keep wickets with the umpire’s consent.

Devdutt Padikkal’s inclusion in the Indian squad as a last-minute addition came about due to KL Rahul’s absence from the third Test. When KL Rahul was ruled out, it created a vacancy in the squad, leading to Padikkal being called up to fill the spot. As a result, Padikkal found himself in the team as a substitute fielder during the match against England.

India may not be permitted to make a like-for-like replacement for Ravichandran Ashwin, who can both bat and bowl, for the remainder of the Test match. However, there could be a provision under Article 1.2, which pertains to the “Nomination and replacement of players,” that might offer India the chance to request a replacement for Ashwin. This provision could potentially enable India to nominate another player to take Ashwin’s place in the squad for the remainder of the match.

According to the MCC law, “No player may be replaced after the nomination without the consent of the opposing captain. Any replacement player shall be considered the same player as the nominated player he/she replaced for the purposes of these Laws. A replacement shall not bat in an innings in which the nominated player he/she is replacing has completed his/her innings.” This means that any replacement player must be approved by the opposing captain, and they will be considered the same player as the one they are replacing for the duration of the match.

Yes, if India submits a formal request to the England team management and they agree, then either Washington Sundar or Axar Patel can come into the XI in place of Ashwin. They would be able to bat or bowl from the second innings onwards, provided the opposing captain consents to the replacement as per the MCC law.

Ravichandran Ashwin, the Indian cricketer, made the decision to withdraw from the third Test match against England due to a family medical emergency. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) released a statement confirming Ashwin’s withdrawal, stating that it was effective immediately. The statement expressed the BCCI’s support for Ashwin and his family during this challenging time, emphasizing the importance of prioritizing the health and well-being of players and their loved ones. As a result, Ashwin flew from Rajkot to Chennai on Friday night to attend to the family matter.

BCCI vice president Rajeev Shukla expressed his well wishes for the speedy recovery of the mother of cricketer Ravichandran Ashwin. He mentioned in a post on X (formerly Twitter) that Ashwin had to leave the Rajkot test match against England and rush to Chennai to be with his mother during this time.

On an eventful day of cricket, Ravichandran Ashwin, known for his all-round abilities, showcased his skills both with the bat and the ball. Playing his 98th Test match since his debut in 2011, Ashwin contributed significantly with the bat, scoring a crucial 37 runs. His innings included a pivotal 77-run partnership for the eighth wicket with debutant Dhruv Jurel. This partnership helped India post a respectable total of 445 all out in their first innings during the match at Rajkot.

After achieving a monumental milestone in his career, Ashwin expressed his sentiments, stating, “It’s a good time to celebrate, probably go have dinner and think about how far I have come in life.” His comment reflected a mix of gratitude and humility as he reflected on his journey.

During the Test match, Ashwin entered an exclusive club of bowlers with 500 Test wickets. He reached this milestone with a well-executed delivery at leg-stump, which resulted in England’s Zak Crawley top-edging the ball to Rajat Patidar at fine leg.

Following this achievement, Ashwin was embraced by his Indian teammates, and he acknowledged the applause from the crowd by raising his hand, symbolizing his gratitude for their support throughout his journey.

Ashwin’s achievement of joining the elite club of bowlers with 500 Test wickets placed him among legends like Muttiah Muralitharan (Sri Lanka – 800), the late Shane Warne (Australia – 708), Anil Kumble (India – 619), and Nathan Lyon (Australia – 517). This remarkable feat underscored his skill, dedication, and longevity in the sport.

However, amidst the celebrations, Ashwin experienced a setback on the field when he was penalized for running down the middle of the pitch. This action resulted in India being handed a five-run penalty. Despite this incident, Ashwin’s accomplishment stood as a testament to his remarkable career as a cricketer.
