Ashwin’s Message to Cook: ‘If He Thinks I Did It on Purpose…’

Before withdrawing from the Test series due to a family emergency, Ravichandran Ashwin responded to Alastair Cook’s comments questioning his sportsmanship.

A few hours before Ravichandran Ashwin withdrew from the Test squad due to a family medical emergency, he responded to Alastair Cook’s claims accusing him of deliberately running on the pitch to gain an advantage while bowling. Ashwin’s action of tapping a ball from Rehan Ahmed during the 105th over of the Indian innings on Day 2 inadvertently led to his feet landing on the danger area of the pitch.

Alastair Cook, while commentating for TNT Sports, accused Ashwin of deliberately running on the pitch to disrupt it and gain an advantage while bowling. He suggested that it was a tactical ploy by Ashwin to disturb the middle of the wicket, insinuating gamesmanship on the part of the Indian spinner. However, it was clear that Ashwin’s action was accidental, and India was penalized five runs for unfair play.

Upon learning of Alastair Cook’s remarks, Ravichandran Ashwin responded with his trademark wit and spontaneity. He cleverly stated that he had spoken with the officials and reserved the same sentiments for Cook, suggesting that he had addressed the matter with the appropriate authorities.

In what might have been his final interaction of the series, Ravichandran Ashwin addressed the issue with honesty and humor. He acknowledged being aware of the warnings but humorously attributed his inability to get off the pitch in time to his “poor motor skills.” Ashwin clarified that despite any assumptions from the English media and players, his actions were not intentional.

Ashwin further emphasized his stance by expressing his acceptance of how others may perceive the incident. He humorously reiterated his explanation to the on-field umpires, Joel Wilson and Kumar Dharmasena, referring to his actions as “pure poor motor skills.” Ashwin jokingly suggested that if he possessed better skills, he would have pursued a career in the Olympics rather than cricket.

Ashwin’s eagerness to bowl on Day 3 was palpable as he had just achieved a significant milestone in his career by claiming his 500th Test wicket. Before the unfortunate turn of events, he had contributed significantly with the bat, scoring a valuable 39 runs, and then achieved the milestone with the ball by dismissing opener Zak Crawley. This marked a momentous occasion for Ashwin, who was undoubtedly eager to continue his bowling exploits in the match.

Ashwin’s departure from the series due to a family emergency marked an unfortunate anticlimax after achieving the significant milestone of 500 Test wickets. Despite the personal joy of reaching this rare feat for a Test bowler, Ashwin’s focus remained on the game, expressing eagerness to contribute further on Day 3. However, his sudden departure to attend to his mother underscored the priorities beyond cricket, highlighting the challenges of balancing professional and personal responsibilities.

Ashwin’s eagerness to contribute with the ball on Day 3 was palpable, especially given England’s strong position at stumps on Day 2. His anticipation to bowl to Ben Duckett early in his innings, coupled with Ashwin’s proven success against left-handed batsmen, hinted at the potential impact he could have had on the game’s outcome. However, his untimely departure from the series cut short his aspirations to make a difference on the field.
