Indian Government Considering Lowered Import Taxes for Tesla: Reports
Tesla, the electric car manufacturer under the leadership of Elon Musk, is reportedly on the verge of entering the Indian market. A recent report indicates that the Indian government is nearing finalization of new import duties specifically aimed at global EV manufacturers like Tesla, particularly for vehicles priced above Rs 30 lakh.
However, this reduction in import duties is expected to be temporary, according to a report by ET. This development marks a significant step forward after years of speculation regarding Tesla’s potential entry into the Indian market.
According to sources, a recent report suggests that the Indian government is crafting a policy to provide Tesla with a 2-3 year window of reduced import taxes. This initiative aims to lower the high import duties on luxury cars, contingent upon Tesla’s commitment to future local manufacturing and provision of bank guarantees.
India’s current import tax structure imposes substantial tariffs, particularly on luxury cars. Vehicles valued at over USD 40,000 (roughly Rs 33 lakh) face a steep 100 percent import duty, while those priced below this threshold still incur a significant 60 percent tariff. These high import taxes pose a barrier to entry for foreign automakers like Tesla, making it financially challenging to introduce their vehicles to the Indian market.
Indeed, the Indian government’s strategy to offer concessions to Tesla and other foreign electric car manufacturers is primarily aimed at boosting local manufacturing and job creation within the country. By incentivizing these companies to build their cars in India, the government seeks to stimulate growth in the domestic electric vehicle (EV) market and capitalize on the rapidly expanding global trend towards electric mobility.
Domestic EV players in India, such as Ola and Mahindra & Mahindra, are cautious about providing special treatment to international EV manufacturers like Tesla. Ola CEO Bhavish Aggarwal has opposed incentives for foreign players in the past, while Mahindra & Mahindra has advocated for maintaining a level playing field between domestic and international EV makers.
