2024 Box Office Clashes: What to Expect from Maidaan vs Bade Miyan Chote Miyan, Pushpa 2 vs Singham Again, and More

2024 Box Office Clash: Maidaan vs Bade Miyan Chote Miyan, Pushpa 2 vs Singham Again, and More.

The box office resurgence seen in the previous year has set high expectations for 2024. With several highly anticipated movies scheduled to release in the coming months, clashes between films are inevitable. From “Crakk – Jeetegaa toh Jiyegaa” to “Article 370” on February 23, “Bade Miyan Chow Miyan (BMCM)” and “Maidaan” on April 10 (Eid), “Emergency” and “Chandu Champion” on June 14, to “Pushpa 2: The Rule” and “Singham Again” on Independence Day, there are numerous clashes lined up. These clashes are expected to intensify competition at the box office, potentially impacting the business of individual films.

Trade expert and producer Girish Johar acknowledges that clashes are unavoidable, especially on festive weekends. However, he expresses concerns about the Independence Day overlap between Allu Arjun’s “Pushpa 2: The Rule” and Ajay Devgn’s “Singham Again.” Given that both are “commercial big-screen franchises,” Johar believes there’s a high probability of them impacting each other’s business. He also mentions rumors suggesting that “Pushpa 2” might get postponed in response to this clash.

The clash is particularly concerning given the remarkable box office performance of South Indian films in the Hindi belt. A recent example is the Telugu film “HanuMan,” which has demonstrated the growing appeal and success of South Indian cinema in Hindi-speaking regions.

Despite clashes, experiences from the previous year, such as with “Gadar 2” and “OMG 2,” have shown that a box-office battle doesn’t necessarily result in disaster.

Sanjay Mehta highlights the release clash between “Salaar: Part I” and “Dunki” on Christmas. Initially, “Dunki” attracted viewers due to Shah Rukh Khan’s recent successes, but as it didn’t meet expectations, screenings for “Dunki” decreased in smaller cities while those for “Salaar” increased.

The year 2024, amidst general elections, presents scheduling challenges for filmmakers. Avoiding election days, IPL months, and exam periods limits options, leading to inevitable clashes.

Trade analyst Taran Adarsh emphasizes the importance of multiple releases on a single day, given the limited number of Fridays in a year. However, the absence of films by major stars like the Khans and Ranbir Kapoor in 2024 could affect box office prospects. Ultimately, a film’s success depends on its content.

Sanjeev Kumar Bijli, Executive Director of PVR INOX Ltd., highlights the significance of organic buzz alongside factors like star cast and social media hype for a film’s performance. He sees exciting clashes between highly anticipated movies as beneficial, as they generate substantial footfall, thereby spicing up the scenario in 2024.
