Google Layoffs: Affected Employees Given Opportunity to Explore Internal Opportunities

Alphabet Workers Union Criticizes Google’s Recent Layoffs Amidst Cost-Cutting Measures

Google has recently disclosed plans for significant layoffs, affecting a substantial number of employees within its digital assistant, hardware, and engineering teams.

This strategic move is aligned with the company’s broader initiative to reduce expenses and streamline its operations. This announcement comes almost precisely one year after Google’s previous large-scale layoffs, where 12,000 employees were impacted, signifying an ongoing effort by the company to adjust its workforce and allocate resources more efficiently.

Based on the information from Bloomberg, Google’s recent layoffs will specifically target employees engaged in the development of Google Assistant, a voice-activated technology, and individuals within the augmented reality hardware team. Additionally, job cuts will extend to the company’s central engineering organization.

According to a statement from a Google spokesperson, the company underwent organizational changes in the latter half of 2023 aimed at improving efficiency and realigning resources with top product priorities. As a result of these changes, job cuts are being implemented globally.

The affected employees have been notified of the situation, and they will be given the opportunity to explore other open positions within Google as part of the company’s effort to support affected individuals in finding alternative roles.

The Alphabet Workers Union, representing a portion of Google employees, has voiced its disapproval of the recent layoffs. In a statement posted on the social network X (formerly known as Twitter), the union expressed concern over the continued termination of employees despite the company’s consistent high earnings, amounting to billions every quarter.

The union emphasized the dedication of its members and colleagues who contribute to creating excellent products for users, deeming it unacceptable for the company to persist in job cuts.
