According to scientists, the presence of volcanoes on an Earth-sized planet orbiting a faint star in close proximity to our galaxy provides compelling evidence of extraterrestrial volcanism, comparable to the volcanic activity observed on Jupiter’s moon Io.
On Wednesday, researchers revealed that this planet, which is the third to be discovered orbiting the same star, is believed to be extensively dotted with volcanoes, resembling the volcanic landscape of Io. This finding represents one of the strongest indications to date of volcanic phenomena occurring outside our solar system. The observations indicate a rugged and rocky world perpetually plagued by ongoing volcanic eruptions.
Within our solar system, Earth, Venus, and certain moons of Jupiter display volcanic activity, and now this Earth-sized planet in our galactic neighborhood joins the list, shedding new light on the occurrence of volcanism in distant celestial bodies.
