In order to meet its goal, Serum Institute of India manufactured over 10 crore doses of its COVID-19 vaccine Covishield in June, as India accelerates its immunisation push in the face of a potential third wave of viral illness.

The Covid-19 inoculation effort in India has gained up steam under the current phase of universalisation of COVID-19 immunisation, which began on June 21, with about 69 lakh vaccine doses being delivered on an average daily basis in the previous six days.

According to immunisation data published on Sunday, India gave 64.25 lakh vaccine doses in a single day, bringing the total number of jabs given so far under the countrywide immunisation programme to 32.17 crore.

According to information supplied to the Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI) by the Pune-based Serum Institute of India, 45 batches of Covishield, totaling 10.80 crore doses, have been delivered to the Central Drugs Laboratory, Kasauli for release in June.

Prakash Kumar Singh, the company’s Director of Government and Regulatory Affairs, informed Union Home Minister Amit Shah in May that Covishield manufacturing will be increased to 10 crore doses in June.

According to the Health Ministry, the countrywide vaccination push has been accelerated by the availability of additional vaccinations, advance visibility of vaccine availability to states and union territories, allowing them to prepare better, and simplifying the vaccine supply chain.

Vaccine doses are supplied free of charge by the Centre under the new guidelines and are allotted to states and union territories based on factors such as population, disease burden, and immunisation progress. The Centre obtains 75% of the vaccinations manufactured in the country.

Everyone above the age of 18 is eligible for free vaccination shots.
