“Engineer from Uttarakhand, Akash Madhwal’s impressive performance propels Mumbai Indians towards the summit clash in IPL 2023”

Rohit Sharma, the captain of Mumbai Indians, had full confidence in Akash Madhwal’s talent based on his two years with the team and believed that the young player would excel if given the opportunity. Madhwal, an engineer from Uttarakhand, showcased remarkable figures of 5 for 5 in 3.3 overs, contributing to Mumbai Indians’ 81-run victory over Lucknow Super Giants in the IPL Eliminator on Wednesday.

Expressing his satisfaction at the post-match presentation, Rohit stated, “That is what we have done over the years. People don’t expect us to do what we have done, but we managed to.” Regarding Madhwal, the skipper acknowledged having observed his progress within the Mumbai Indians setup. He mentioned, “He (Akash) was part of the team last year as a support bowler, and once Jofra (Archer) was gone, I knew he had the skills and character to do the job for us.”

As an experienced IPL captain, Rohit understands the importance of effective man management. He emphasized the significance of making young players feel valued and integrated within the team. He said, “Over the years, we have seen many guys coming in from Mumbai Indians and playing for India. It is important to make them (youngsters) feel special and make them feel part of the team. My job is to just make them comfortable in the middle.”

During the match, there were three run-outs in Lucknow Super Giants’ run chase, with Rohit being involved in two of them, including a direct hit to dismiss Krishnappa Gowtham. The Mumbai Indians’ fielding performance was celebrated, and Rohit expressed his satisfaction with the team’s overall contribution in the field. He acknowledged the different dynamics of playing in Chennai compared to the team’s home ground, Wankhede Stadium.

On the other hand, Akash Madhwal, in a humble manner, credited his ability to learn quickly to his engineering background. Madhwal, who will turn 30 later this year, hadn’t played competitive leather ball cricket until the age of 23 as he focused on obtaining his engineering degree. He primarily played tennis ball cricket until Uttarakhand gained BCCI affiliation, providing him an opportunity to enter the competitive cricket arena.

When asked about his journey, Madhwal replied, “I was just practicing and waiting for this opportunity. I completed my engineering and played tennis ball cricket since it was my passion. Engineers have a tendency to learn quickly,” he said with a sheepish grin. Reflecting on his performances, Madhwal expressed pride in his achievements but also expressed his determination to improve further.

Being Jasprit Bumrah’s replacement for the season, Madhwal felt humble when questioned about filling the shoes of India’s pace spearhead. He acknowledged Bumrah’s unique place in the team and mentioned, “Bumrah bhai has his own place, and I’m just trying to play my role. Nicholas Pooran’s wicket was the best. Everyone at home believes I’m working hard.
