Microsoft Corp announced Chief Executive Officer Satya Nadella as its next chairman on Wednesday, succeeding John Thompson. Nadella, who succeeded Steve Ballmer as CEO in 2014, has been important in the company’s growth, including billion-dollar acquisitions such as LinkedIn, Nuance Communications, and ZeniMax.

Thompson, who took over as chairman from Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates in 2014, will serve as lead independent director, according to the firm. It is now the time for Satya Nadella to continue Microsoft’s legacy as chairman.

The top-level management move comes little over a year after Gates stepped away from the board, stating that he would focus on the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, one of the world’s largest charities.

The firm stated last month that it began an investigation into Gates’ interaction with an employee nearly 20 years ago after learning in 2019 that he had attempted to develop a romantic relationship with the individual.

Microsoft has refused to say on whether its board of directors had decided Gates should step down. In addition, the firm declared a quarterly dividend of 56 cents per share, payable on September 9.
