England’s Collapse for 122: Rohit Sharma Praises Youngsters’ Character in Chase for 557

After India’s monumental 434-run victory over England in the third Test at Rajkot, which stands as the team’s largest win in terms of runs, captain Rohit Sharma emphasized the significant takeaway from the match: the impressive performance of the young players when it mattered most.

Rohit Sharma credited the young players for their resilience and determination, highlighting their display of character and readiness to excel at the international level. He emphasized the importance of bench strength, which was evident throughout the series. Despite facing adversity early on in the first innings, with the team at 33 for 3, India’s ability to bounce back and secure a victory was a testament to their depth and resilience.

India’s young players’ performances signal a promising future for the Test team.

Yashasvi Jaiswal, 22, is now the third youngest player to achieve two double hundreds in cricket, with Vinod Kambli and Don Bradman holding the top spots.

Sarfaraz Khan, aged 26, capitalized on his Test debut by scoring two half-centuries. His consistent performances in first-class cricket over the years finally paid off on the international stage.

Meanwhile, Shubman Gill, aged 24, initially faced pressure at the start of the series. However, he turned his fortunes around with a century in the last Test match and followed it up with a solid knock of 91 runs in the second innings of the current Test.

England’s second innings collapse, with the team being dismissed for just 122 runs while chasing a target of 557, harked back to an earlier era when English batsmen often succumbed to collapses. This was particularly evident after their bowlers conceded a significant number of runs to the Indian batsmen, reminiscent of historical encounters between the two teams.

The conclusion of the match evoked memories of the 1990s era, following two closely contested Tests where England impressed with their aggressive batting and bowling tactics. Despite their victory, the Indian team’s celebrations were subdued, characterized by handshakes and light pats on the backs as they made their way towards the dressing room.

Ravindra Jadeja, however, raised his arms in triumph to bask in the win and acknowledge his stellar performances. His game-changing century in the first innings and five-wicket haul in the second, which saw England being bowled out in less than 40 overs, played a pivotal role in India’s victory.

The match was marked by several dramatic moments, beginning with India’s early stumble to 33 for 3 on the opening morning. Another significant event was R Ashwin’s departure from the game midway on the evening of Day 2 due to a family emergency, shortly after achieving the remarkable milestone of 500 Test wickets. However, he displayed remarkable commitment by rejoining the team on Sunday morning, demonstrating his dedication to putting the team first, as acknowledged by Rohit Sharma.

Despite Ashwin’s absence, it was Ravindra Jadeja who emerged as the hero of the match. Following his impressive century in the first innings, he delivered a five-wicket haul in the second innings, bowling out England for just 122 runs and earning the well-deserved man-of-the-match award.

The match also prompts questions about England’s aggressive approach, termed “Bazball.” Critics may question whether they went too far or got carried away with their tactics. In particular, two moments on the third day of the match are likely to come under scrutiny.

England experienced significant setbacks during their innings, notably with Joe Root’s dismissal while attempting a reverse sweep to Jasprit Bumrah, followed by Ben Stokes’ slog to long-on when they seemed to be recovering. The day was further marred by Ben Duckett’s dismissal, carving a wide delivery straight to cover.

Stokes acknowledged that Root’s dismissal was the turning point of the innings but refrained from questioning the approach of a seasoned player with an impressive Test record. Despite the setbacks, Stokes affirmed England’s commitment to their aggressive approach, known as Bazball, emphasizing the importance of execution rather than altering their style of play.

On a challenging opening day with India struggling at 33 for 3 on a seemingly flat pitch, the senior players rose to the occasion. Rohit Sharma and Ravindra Jadeja formed a crucial partnership, both scoring centuries and adding 204 runs to stabilize the innings. Despite this partnership, India’s position remained precarious. However, Sarfaraz Khan’s aggressive innings, scoring a brisk 62 off just 66 balls, not only consolidated India’s position but also demonstrated effective tactics against England’s spinners on the track. Sarfaraz’s innings played a vital role in strengthening India’s grip on the match.

The emergence of youngsters like Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sarfaraz Khan has been pivotal for India, particularly evident in their impactful performances in the series. Jaiswal’s aggressive batting in the second innings further solidified India’s commanding position in the match. Their contributions underline a positive trend, as three of the most assertive innings in the series have come from these young talents.

As the series progressed, there were concerns about India’s lack of experience among players. However, the performances of the youngsters are a reassuring sign for the team management, especially following the disappointments of players like Shreyas Iyer and Axar Patel.

Rohit Sharma emphasized the importance of hard work and execution in Test cricket, highlighting India’s success in sticking to their plans and executing them effectively with both bat and ball.

Ultimately, it was a collective effort that secured the victory for India, showcasing the team’s depth and resilience. On the other hand, England may need to engage in some introspection, even if they do not publicly acknowledge it, to address their shortcomings and bounce back in the series.
