Mahindra has achieved a significant milestone by becoming the inaugural external automotive manufacturer to adopt Volkswagen’s unified cell concept, a pivotal element of the latter’s battery strategy.

Volkswagen Group and Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. (M&M) have entered into a supply agreement aimed at advancing electric mobility in India. As part of this collaboration, Mahindra’s INGLO electric platform will integrate Volkswagen’s MEB electric components and unified cells. This partnership represents a strategic alliance between two prominent players in the automotive industry, signaling a concerted effort to drive the adoption of electric vehicles in the Indian market.

Volkswagen Group and Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. (M&M) assert that their collaboration signifies a significant advancement toward their common goal of promoting e-mobility. Building upon their initial partnership announced in 2022, the agreement spans multiple years and encompasses a total volume of around 50 GWh throughout its duration.

Mahindra’s partnership with Volkswagen marks a significant milestone, as Mahindra becomes the inaugural external automaker to adopt Volkswagen’s unified cell concept, a pivotal component of its battery strategy.

This collaboration is poised to bring about a substantial transformation in India’s e-mobility sector, particularly noteworthy in a market that witnessed the introduction of over five million new vehicles in 2023, solidifying its position as one of the largest automotive markets globally. Mahindra’s ambitious plan includes the launch of five all-electric SUVs, scheduled to commence from December 2024.

Volkswagen’s MEB platform and its components are utilized not only by Volkswagen’s own brands such as Volkswagen, Audi, Skoda, and SEAT/CUPRA but also by external companies like Ford and Mahindra. Spearheading the collaboration with Mahindra, Volkswagen Group Technology and its ‘Platform Business’ unit, in conjunction with Skoda Auto Volkswagen India Pvt. Ltd., are at the forefront of this partnership, signaling a concerted effort to drive forward the electrification agenda in India’s automotive landscape.
