Key findings from the study include:
Encounter with Fake Profiles: 77% of Indians have encountered fake profiles or AI-generated photos on dating websites, apps, or social media platforms.
Online Conversations with Scammers: 39% of Indians reported that their online conversations with potential love interests turned out to be with scammers.
Interaction with AI-Generated Bots: 26% discovered that they were actually interacting with AI-generated bots, not real individuals.
Contact by Strangers: A striking 91% of Indians reported being contacted by strangers through social media or text messages, leading to regular chatting with them or someone they know.
The role of AI in online dating is significant:
AI Content Creation: 65% of Indian respondents admitted to using AI tools like ChatGPT to generate content for dating apps.

Reactions to AI-Generated Messages: Despite the potential benefits, 60% of people would feel hurt or offended if they discovered their Valentine’s message was written by AI.
Effectiveness of AI: Nevertheless, 81% reported receiving more interest and better responses when using AI-generated content.
Rising threats associated with Valentine’s Day:
Malware Campaigns: There has been a 25% increase in malware campaigns, targeting individuals through various online platforms.
Malicious URLs: A significant surge of 300% has been observed in malicious URLs, often leading to fraudulent websites or phishing attempts.
Romance-themed Spam and Email Scams: Instances of romance-themed spam and email scams have skyrocketed by 400%, with scammers exploiting the Valentine’s season to target individuals shopping for gifts or browsing related content.
These threats are anticipated to escalate as February 14 approaches. It is crucial for individuals, even those not using dating apps or sites, to exercise caution and remain vigilant against such malicious activities.
Staying Safe:
Scrutinize Direct Messages: Exercise caution with consistent, generic, or shallow messages, which may be AI-generated. Refrain from clicking on links from unfamiliar individuals.
Perform a Reverse-Image Search: Utilize tools to conduct a reverse-image search. Discrepancies between the person’s profile and search results could indicate a scam.
Never Send Money or Gifts: Refrain from sharing personal or financial information, even if prompted by the other person. Be cautious of scammers who may attempt to build trust by sending money first.
Talk to Someone You Trust: If friends or family express concerns about your online interactions, take their advice seriously. Proceed with caution and be mindful of any inconsistencies in the other person’s behavior or story.
Invest in Protection Tools: Consider utilizing protection tools like McAfee Scam Protection from McAfee’s portfolio. These tools are designed to detect and safeguard against online threats and scams in real-time, providing an additional layer of security for your online activities.
