Rumors Suggest Apple’s Plans for Flip-Style Foldable Phone

Apple is testing two foldable phone prototypes resembling Samsung and Oppo designs, but mass production isn’t expected until 2026.

Apple is currently in the experimental phase with two prototypes of foldable phones. However, there are no immediate plans for mass production of these devices until at least 2026.

Additionally, the company is concurrently developing a foldable iPad, which is also projected to potentially debut around the same time in 2026.

Apple is reportedly on the verge of introducing a groundbreaking foldable phone, a topic that has been the subject of speculation for some time. According to a recent report by GSMArena, Apple is in the process of developing two distinct versions of foldable phones, resembling the design of the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip and Oppo Find N3 Flip. These phones are characterized by their smaller size and flip-open mechanism, reminiscent of a clamshell, in contrast to the larger foldable phones offered by Samsung or OnePlus.

While Apple is indeed in the testing phase for these new foldable phones, it doesn’t guarantee their imminent release. It appears that Apple is still in the process of refining and experimenting with various designs. As of now, there are no indications that Apple plans to commence mass production of these phones in 2022 or even by 2025. Therefore, if Apple does decide to proceed with the project, consumers may not expect to see these foldable phones until at least 2026.

Apple has initiated discussions with at least one company in Asia to source components for these forthcoming foldable phones. However, as with any significant project, there’s always the possibility that it may not come to fruition if Apple isn’t satisfied with the progress or outcomes of these discussions.

Apple has been actively pursuing the development of a foldable iPhone since 2018, aiming for a design that maintains the slim profile characteristic of their regular iPhones when closed. However, they’ve encountered challenges along the way, such as ensuring adequate battery life and perfecting the screen technology. Initially, Apple considered an external screen design similar to Huawei’s Mate X, but this approach proved to be unfeasible.

In 2020, Apple temporarily halted work on the foldable iPhone and shifted focus towards exploring the development of a foldable iPad, potentially slated for release around 2026. However, recent indications suggest that Apple has resumed efforts on both projects simultaneously.

Currently, Apple’s engineers are grappling with technical challenges, including eliminating the crease on the screen and ensuring smooth functionality of the hinge mechanism. Additionally, they are striving to optimize compatibility with the Apple Pencil for the new foldable phone.

While reports suggest that LG and Samsung Display are assisting with the development of the foldable iPad, the manufacturer responsible for producing screens for the foldable iPhone remains unknown.

As anticipation builds for the potential release of a foldable iPhone, it’s evident that details regarding Apple’s plans for this innovative device are still forthcoming. We eagerly await further updates from Apple on this exciting development.
