WhatsApp took significant action in December 2023 by banning a record 69 lakh bad accounts in India.
WhatsApp reported banning a record-breaking over 69 lakh bad accounts in India during December 2023. The action is in line with the new IT Rules 2021. Between December 1-31, the company took measures against a total of “6,934,000 accounts” that were deemed to violate the platform’s policies.
In its monthly compliance report, WhatsApp revealed that about 1,658,000 of the banned accounts, out of the total 6,934,000, were proactively taken down before receiving any user reports.
In December, WhatsApp, with over 500 million users in India, received a record 16,366 complaint reports. Out of these, 13 actions were taken, indicating instances where WhatsApp addressed the reported issues. “Accounts Actioned” refers to situations where remedial actions were initiated based on the received reports. Such actions could involve banning an account or restoring a previously banned account based on the nature of the reported concerns.
The user-safety report from WhatsApp provides insights into the user complaints received and the corresponding actions taken by the platform. It also highlights the preventive measures implemented by WhatsApp to combat abuse on its platform.
