The Indian tennis team is poised to embark on a historic campaign in Pakistan for the Davis Cup 2024 World Group I play-off. The matches are scheduled for February 3 and 4 at the Pakistan Sports Complex in Islamabad. This marks India’s first visit to Pakistan for a Davis Cup face-off since 1964.
India secured qualification for the World Group I play-offs after a 4-1 victory against Morocco in September last year. A successful outcome against Pakistan would propel India into World Group I, with subsequent matches slated for September this year.
The Davis Cup 2024 World Group I play-off between India and Pakistan will not include Australian Open heroes Rohan Bopanna and Sumit Nagal. Ramkumar Ramanathan, ranked 461 in the world, will lead India’s singles challenge, with Sriram Balaji playing the other singles tie.
Yuki Bhambri and Saketh Myneni are set to team up for the doubles match. India’s coach, Zeeshan Ali, will also serve as the non-playing captain in the absence of Rohit Rajpal, who is unavailable due to personal reasons.

February 3, Saturday:
February 4, Sunday:
Rohan Bopanna, who won the men’s doubles title at the 2024 Australian Open, will not be part of India’s Davis Cup team against Pakistan. Bopanna concluded his Davis Cup career in September during India’s 4-1 victory against Morocco in the World Group II tie in Lucknow.
He played his final match partnering with Yuki Bhambri, securing a 6-2 6-1 win over Elliot Benchetrit and Younes Lalami Laaroussi. This victory contributed to India’s qualification for the World Group I play-offs. Bopanna’s decision to end his Davis Cup career has led to his absence from the current match against Pakistan.
Sumit Nagal, India’s highest-ranked player who achieved a historic round-one win in men’s singles at the Australian Open 2024, has opted out of the Davis Cup match against Pakistan. Sasi Kumar Mukund, another player who participated in the contest against Morocco in September, has also chosen not to participate.
The All India Tennis Association expressed confusion over their unavailability, as the exact reasons behind their decision have not been communicated. Both Nagal and Mukund played crucial roles in the previous Davis Cup match, with Nagal winning both his singles contests, while Mukund was unfortunately forced to retire in the opening tie.
