Meta, Discord, and TikTok Under Fire: Lawmakers Criticize Lack of Full Support, Demand Answers.

During a recent hearing in the US Congress, CEOs of prominent tech companies received criticism regarding their platforms’ approach to ensuring online safety for children and teenagers.

The scrutiny occurred within the backdrop of discussions surrounding the proposed Kids Online Safety Act (KOSA), a contentious bill designed to address and mitigate potential dangers that social media poses to children.

In the recent US Congress hearing, Microsoft and X (formerly Twitter) declared their public support for the Kids Online Safety Act (KOSA). Linda Yaccarino, CEO of X, and Evan Spiegel from Snap voiced their backing for the proposed legislation. However, Meta, Discord, and TikTok did not offer full support for KOSA.

These companies acknowledged support for certain aspects of the bill while expressing reservations or disagreement with other parts.

Critics Warn KOSA May Sanitize Internet, Enable Censorship, and Isolate LGBTQ Youth; Privacy Advocates Alarmed at Encryption Threats.

The absence of complete endorsement from Meta, Discord, and TikTok has triggered criticism, leading lawmakers to adopt a tough stance during recent hearings. Specifically, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg faced rigorous questioning regarding his company’s commitment to ensuring the online safety of children and teenagers.

Lawmakers pressed for assurances and commitments from Meta to address concerns related to the safety and well-being of younger users on their platform.

The Kids Online Safety Act (KOSA) is a proposed piece of legislation designed to safeguard children from the potential risks associated with social media platforms.

Support for KOSA:

  • Microsoft and X publicly endorse KOSA. This support was declared during a hearing where tech CEOs, including Linda Yaccarino from X and Evan Spiegel from Snap, expressed their backing.

Non-Support for KOSA:

  • Meta (formerly Facebook), Discord, and TikTok have not offered full support for KOSA. While acknowledging some parts of the bill, they have expressed reservations or disagreement with other provisions.

Controversies Surrounding KOSA:

  1. Potential Sanitization of the Internet: Critics argue that KOSA may lead to sanitizing the internet, limiting content and expression.
  2. Empowerment of Censorship: Concerns have been raised that KOSA could empower censorship, restricting freedom of speech and online discourse.
  3. Isolation of Young LGBTQ Individuals: Some critics fear KOSA might isolate young LGBTQ individuals, impacting their ability to express themselves and connect online.
  4. Threat to Encryption: Security, privacy, and free press advocates are concerned about KOSA’s potential impact on encryption, which could compromise user privacy and data security.
