IBM has issued an ultimatum to remote workers, excluding those with exceptions like medical reasons or military service, requiring them to relocate near an IBM office by the beginning of August. The relocation is expected to be within a range of 50 miles (80 kilometers) from an IBM facility.

This move reflects a shift in IBM’s approach to remote work, emphasizing the importance of proximity to office locations for certain employees.

IBM has issued a companywide ultimatum to managers who are still working remotely: either relocate near an office or face the option of leaving the company.

IBM has issued a directive to managers working remotely, stating that they must either relocate near an IBM office or find a role that is approved for remote work; otherwise, they are asked to “separate from IBM.”

IBM plans to use badge-in data to “assess individual presence” and will share this information with managers and human resources, according to a note sent to the company’s managers.

IBM has directed remote workers, excluding those with exceptions like medical issues or military service, to relocate near an IBM office by the beginning of August. This typically entails moving within 50 miles (80 kilometers) of an IBM facility, as reported by Bloomberg.

IBM is prioritizing a work environment that balances flexibility and in-person interactions for increased productivity and innovation. As part of this approach, executives and people managers in the United States are now required to be in the office at least three days per week.

IBM’s CEO, Arvind Krishna, has consistently emphasized the significance of in-person work. In a May 2023 interview with Bloomberg, Krishna indicated that promotions within the company would be less common for those who choose not to work on-site. This aligns with the broader strategy of encouraging physical presence to foster collaboration and innovation.

Some teams within IBM had already implemented office attendance requirements, as outlined in a November memo to employees in the infrastructure business unit. The memo mandated a minimum of three days a week at company locations, with higher expectations for managers and executives to be present in the office more frequently. This approach reflects IBM’s proactive stance in prioritizing in-person engagement for certain roles within the company.
