Anurag Kashyap lauds “12th Fail,” featuring Vikrant Massey and directed by Vidhu Vinod Chopra, hailing it as a benchmark for filmmakers who have been feeling lost.

Anurag Kashyap has written a commendatory note praising Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s film “12th Fail.” In the note, Kashyap reflects on his meeting with IPS officer Manoj Kumar Sharma, the real-life inspiration behind the film, and acknowledges his inability to visualize Sharma’s story until seeing it portrayed in the film.

Anurag Kashyap has hailed “12th Fail” as a new benchmark set by Vidhu Vinod Chopra. He expressed that filmmakers, including himself, who might feel a bit lost, now have a standard to aspire to. Kashyap went on to label the film as the best mainstream film of 2023. He shared a poster of Vikrant Massey’s film on his Facebook page.

Anurag Kashyap, in his note, mentioned that “12th Fail” is probably the best mainstream film he has seen in 2023. He praised Vidhu Vinod Chopra, who, at the age of 71, crafted a masterpiece out of a simple story. Kashyap commended the film for breaking conventions of mainstream cinema, especially for having scenes done in simple long shots.

Anurag Kashyap highlighted several aspects of “12th Fail” that impressed him. He praised the cinematography, particularly the crowd scenes of Mukherji Nagar, where the camera seemed to capture the story unfolding without disturbing the atmosphere. He appreciated the sparse background score, contrasting it with mainstream cinema that often relies heavily on music to manipulate emotions.

Anurag Kashyap expressed hope and admiration for Vidhu Vinod Chopra, describing him as a filmmaker at the peak of his storytelling, setting a new benchmark for directors like himself who may have been feeling lost. He extended kudos to the entire team of “12th Fail,” including actors Vikrant Massey, Medha Shankar, Anshumaan Pushkar, Anant V Joshi, cinematographer Ranga, production designer, music directors, and writers.

Anurag Kashyap reminisced about meeting IPS officer Manoj Kumar Sharma and reading the book but acknowledged that he couldn’t visualize the story the way Vidhu Vinod Chopra did in “12th Fail.” He recommended the film, emphasizing that it’s a must-watch, even if he was unable to see it in cinemas. “12th Fail” is available on HotStar.

The film “12th Fail” narrates the true story of Manoj Kumar Sharma, who triumphed over poverty to achieve the position of an IPS officer. The narrative also sheds light on his journey alongside his wife, Shraddha Joshi, an IRS officer, who stood by him during challenging times.
