Navigating India’s T20I World Cup Journey: Amidst Confusion, Seeking Solutions

Virat Kohli will miss the 1st T20I against Afghanistan for personal reasons. Yashasvi Jaiswal will open with Rohit Sharma, and Coach Rahul Dravid mentioned a lack of time to prepare for this year’s T20 World Cup.

It seems like there’s a practice session in Mohali ahead of the first T20I against Afghanistan. India’s head coach Rahul Dravid, batting coach Vikram Rathour, and captain Rohit Sharma are preparing for the match scheduled for Jan. 10, 2024.

Despite the chilly weather with temperatures in single digits, dedicated fans waited for Team India’s bus, eager to catch a glimpse of cricket stars Virat Kohli and captain Rohit Sharma. However, head coach Rahul Dravid, wearing a beanie cap, later announced that Kohli would miss the first match due to personal reasons but would be available for the subsequent two games.

Rohit Sharma faced a delay in his flight, arriving at the stadium an hour later than scheduled.

Coach Rahul Dravid has confirmed that Rohit Sharma, making a return to the T20I team after a 14-month gap, will open alongside Yashasvi Jaiswal.

Rahul Dravid stated, “As of now, we will certainly be opening with Rohit and Jaiswal. But when you have a squad, you have to have that flexibility to do whatever is required if that is in the best interest of the team and gives us the best chance to succeed. So, nothing is closed. But certainly, we’re really happy with what we have.”

Jaiswal has been effective as an opener for us, providing a valuable left-right combination at the top of the order.

With Dravid solidifying Jaiswal and Rohit as the preferred opening pair, Shubman Gill, the IPL’s leading run-scorer, is slated to bat at No. 3 in Kohli’s absence. However, he might have to sit out when Kohli returns for the Indore and Bengaluru games.

Dravid has left the option open for the potential pairing of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma as openers. He stated, “Nothing is closed. We have no doubt that the kind of ability and skill sets players like Rohit and Kohli possess, they will be able to find answers against different kinds of bowling.”

The team management has not ruled out the possibility of using Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli as an opening combination, as confirmed by coach Dravid in Mohali.

Dravid emphasized that the selection of opening batsmen is not solely based on their handedness but rather on their ability to navigate different bowling styles. He expressed confidence in the skills of both Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma to adapt and perform well. While left-handers like Tilak, Rinku, and Jaiswal contribute positively, the ultimate decision will be based on performance rather than the players’ batting hand.

Coach Dravid acknowledged the lack of preparation time for the upcoming T20 World Cup. The three-match series against Afghanistan marks the final international games for Team India before the tournament in June. Due to the prioritization of the ODI World Cup and the limited T20 fixtures post that event, the team management will heavily rely on the IPL to shape the T20 World Cup squad. Dravid emphasized the challenge of not having many opportunities for the team to play together and highlighted the need to adapt to the circumstances.

Dravid highlighted the challenge of a crowded cricket calendar with numerous ICC events in recent years, leading to back-to-back tournaments. This tight schedule has forced the coaching staff and management to prioritize certain formats and tournaments due to the sheer volume of cricket being played. Dravid mentioned the difficulty of managing players across all three formats, and in the ongoing series, players like Bumrah, Jadeja, and Siraj were rested with an eye on the upcoming five-Test series against England. The constant juggling act has been a necessity to keep players fresh and manage their workload effectively.

Coach Dravid has clarified that Ishan Kishan’s return to the national team is contingent on the player making himself available for selection and delivering strong performances in domestic cricket. Despite being dropped from the T20 squad due to the team management’s dissatisfaction with his break request before the Test series in South Africa, Dravid has left the door open for Ishan Kishan’s comeback, emphasizing the importance of consistent performance in the domestic circuit.

Dravid clarified that Ishan Kishan had requested a break during the South Africa series, and the team management granted it. However, Dravid noted that Kishan has not made himself available for selection. Dravid added that once Kishan decides to make himself available, the expectation is that he will participate in domestic cricket and then be considered for selection at the national level.

It is understood that Ishan Kishan, the Jharkhand player, will skip the Ranji Trophy and instead participate directly in the Indian Premier League (IPL). This decision may impact his eligibility or consideration for national team selection, as coach Dravid had emphasized the importance of players performing in domestic cricket to be considered for the national squad.
