Animal Director Sandeep Reddy Vanga Unaware of Misogyny Allegations in His Films

Ranbir Kapoor Takes the Lead in Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s Animal

In this statement, director Sandeep Reddy Vanga is expressing his disagreement with the criticism that his popular film characters, such as Ranvijay Singh, Kabir Singh, and Arjun Reddy, are misogynistic.

He mentions that he personally does not see these characters in that light and finds the accusation puzzling.

The term “15-20 jokers” is likely used dismissively, suggesting that only a small group of people hold this perspective according to him.

The controversy surrounds the film “Animal,” starring Ranbir Kapoor, which has faced criticism for its alleged misogynistic content and portrayal of extreme violence.

Vanga’s response indicates a level of defensiveness and perhaps frustration with the negative reception of his work, implying that he believes the criticism is unwarranted and coming from a small, insignificant group of individuals in his view.

In response to the question about whether he sees the character Ranvijay Singh as misogynistic, Sandeep Reddy Vanga denies the characterization. He defines misogyny as disrespect to women and asserts that neither Ranvijay Singh nor characters from his other films, such as Kabir Singh and Animal, exhibit misogyny.

Vanga extends this denial to himself as a person, emphasizing that the accusations are baseless.

He goes on to express confusion about why people, specifically mentioning “not too many people, only these 15-20 jokers,” perceive his characters in this way. Vanga seems to downplay the criticism and dismisses those who hold such views as a small, insignificant group.

This response reflects Vanga’s stance that the accusation of misogyny is unwarranted and suggests a degree of frustration or disagreement with the way his work is being perceived by a certain segment of the audience. Finally, he turns the question back to the interviewer, asking whether they also believe the characters in his films are misogynistic, perhaps challenging or questioning the validity of the criticism.

Director Sandeep Reddy Vanga Criticizes Modern Movie Analysis: ‘It’s Too Toxic, Too High’

The excerpt from the review highlights the success of the movie “Animal,” surpassing ₹835 crores in global box office earnings. However, it also expresses concerns about the portrayal of Ranbir’s character, labeling him as an epitome of misogyny.

The examples given in the review, such as instructing his younger sister on her choice of drink and mocking his elder sister, suggest that the character exhibits disrespectful behavior towards women. The review implies that the character is polarizing, evoking mixed emotions from the audience—being both loved and hated, while also facing misunderstanding.

In recent events, Congress Rajya Sabha MP Ranjeet Ranjan criticized the film “Animal,” stating that its justification of violence and misogyny is shameful.

Additionally, senior cricketer Jaydev Unadkat expressed similar concerns after watching the film, describing it as an “absolute disaster.”

He criticized the movie for glorifying misogyny in contemporary society and condemned the attempt to label it as “traditional masculinity” and “alpha male,” considering it a disgrace. It’s worth noting that Jaydev Unadkat later deleted his tweet expressing these sentiments.

In contrast, filmmaker Anurag Kashyap came to the defense of the film “Animal,” stating that it has sparked important conversations about misogyny.

According to Kashyap, the movie has galvanized more feminists in India than any other feminist film, leading to increased discussions around the topic of misogyny.

He sees this as a positive outcome, suggesting that the film is serving as a catalyst for important social dialogues. Anurag Kashyap shared these thoughts during an interview with OTTplay at the Kolkata International Film Festival.
