India’s bowling coach, Paras Mhambrey, lauded Ravichandran Ashwin as one of the country’s finest match-winners, while also expressing admiration for the impressive maturity displayed by young Yashasvi Jaiswal in his brilliant Test debut.
Ashwin, currently the top-ranked bowler in the world, delivered outstanding overseas Test figures of 12 for 131 (5/60 and 7/71), leading India to a resounding victory of an innings and 141 runs over a hapless West Indies within three days in the series opener.
Mhambrey highlighted the significance of a substantial first-innings score, which provided a solid foundation for the bowlers. He praised the exceptional bowling performances of Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja.
According to Mhambrey, Ashwin has consistently proven himself as one of the country’s greatest match-winners, having played a pivotal role in numerous victories.
Mhambrey praised the outstanding performance of 21-year-old Jaiswal, emphasizing his fabulous batting display, especially considering it was his debut match and on a challenging wicket.
The pitch was slow and progressively became even slower, making shot-making difficult. However, Jaiswal showcased remarkable adaptability and applied himself skillfully in these conditions.
Mhambrey commended Jaiswal’s approach, highlighting his ability to seize opportunities and take on the game. He expressed satisfaction in witnessing Jaiswal’s excellent adaptation to the unique demands of international cricket, demonstrating the qualities required to excel in different conditions and situations. The bowling coach acknowledged the positive impact of Jaiswal’s performance on his confidence moving forward.
Mhambrey acknowledged the fantastic start India had in the series and emphasized the importance of carrying the momentum into the second Test scheduled in Port of Spain, commencing on July 20th.
“It was an ideal start to the Test match, exactly what we were expecting and aiming for, to carry forward the performance from the previous series. To be honest, we didn’t anticipate it to be as straightforward as it turned out to be.” Mhambrey acknowledged the significant gap in talent between the current West Indies team and the Rohit Sharma-led Indian side, evident in the West Indies’ complete capitulation in the series opener.
However, Mhambrey emphasized that India should not underestimate any international Test match, highlighting the importance of not taking any opposition lightly. He dismissed external opinions and distractions, stating that the focus remains solely on playing international cricket at the highest level, which serves as the ultimate motivation for the players.
“Our plans were well-established, and we were aware of our approach. We intend to maintain the same level of dedication throughout the series. External opinions hold little significance; what truly matters is our thought process and the execution of our plans.”
