In a blog post released on Thursday, Google unveiled the introduction of Search Generative Experience (SGE), an experimental iteration of its search engine that integrates AI-generated responses directly into search results. Unlike the conventional Google Search, which presents a list of blue links, SGE utilizes AI to offer direct answers to user queries on the Google Search webpage. When a search query is entered, a green or blue box will expand, providing a distinctive answer generated by Google’s advanced language model, akin to the technology employed in OpenAI’s ChatGPT.
To generate these responses, Google extracts relevant information from websites and cites the sources it relies on. Furthermore, users have the option to ask follow-up questions within SGE to obtain more precise and targeted results.
Currently, the SGE feature is not available to the general public and requires users to enroll in Google’s Search Labs program. It should be noted that Search Labs is exclusive to a selected group of individuals. During the recent Google I/O event, artificial intelligence (AI) played a prominent role. Cathy Edwards, Google’s VP of Engineering, highlighted that conventional Google Search often necessitates users to break down complex queries into multiple questions, manually search various websites for pertinent information, and mentally piece together the final answer.
