The High Court dismissed the State’s appeal against Ramesh Taurani’s conviction in the Gulshan Kumar murder case on Thursday, bringing relief to the filmmaker.

Ramesh Taurani, in an exclusive interview with ETimes, says, “There hasn’t been anything worse for my family than having me falsely accused of murder. With this decision, I feel vindicated. It’s been a long and gruelling battle – but we never lost faith in truth or India’s judicial system – but I’m delighted to no longer have to wear this heavy load. Thank you very much “..

It should be noted that Ramesh Taurani was charged in the case and served time in prison. Music composer Nadeem, who has been staying away and has yet to surrender in the case, was another film celebrity who had been charged in the case.

Gulshan Kumar, commonly known as the “Cassette King,” was shot and killed outside a temple in Andheri, Mumbai, in August 1997. According to the prosecution, his opponents paid gangster Abu Salem money to have him killed. The acquittal of another defendant in the case, Abdul Rashid Merchant, Rauf’s brother, was also overturned by a division bench of Justices S S Jadhav and N R Borkar, who sentenced him to life in prison.
