Facebook to update community standards, clarifies how it will handle satirical content

Following a proposal from its Oversight Board, Facebook says it will refresh its community standards to be more clear about how it handles sarcastic content, the organization said in a blog entry.

In the blog post the US tech company mentioned that they will add more information to the Community Standard which will clarify what is considered as satire while the assessment of setting content related decisions.

The update comes after the Oversight Board discovered that Facebook wasn’t right to eliminate a client’s comment with a reference to the Turkish government, in light of the two buttons meme.

The Oversight Board brought up in its proposal that while Facebook has said it will make exemptions for satire, it doesn’t determine how or what qualifies as satire in its rules. Facebook said in its post that as well as making its rules around parody more clear

One of the most recent instance where Facebook followed the direction of its Oversight Board. In addition to this the company stated to end the so called Newsworthiness policy which gave liberty to the the government authorities to escape major portion of content rules. According to Nick Clegg in Facebook blog post, the company will now give equal treatment to government authorities and individuals, eliminating the prior preferential treatment.
