The relocation of Apple Inc’s supply chain to India in response to government incentives has allegedly resulted in the creation of around 20,000 jobs in the nation to far. According to a DigiTimes Asia storey, the figure may have been greater if not for the Covid-19 epidemic.
When they registered to participate in the subsidies programme under India’s Production Linked Incentive, manufacturers such as Foxconn, Wistron, and Pegatron pledged to create a specific number of job opportunities (PLI).
The headcount at Wistron’s Indian unit had already approached 10,000 when a workers’ mutiny occurred at the facility in December 2020, requiring the business to suspend and reconfigure its systems and operations, according to the report.
According to the report, Pegatron intends to give jobs to 6,000-7,000 people in India by the end of March 2022.
Apple’s suppliers in India climbed to nine in 2020, up from six in 2018. The number of employees engaged by Apple suppliers would expand in lockstep with the number of companies relocating their supply chains to India.
In another boost to the Indian government’s Make in India and domestic manufacturing dreams, Apple announced in March that its flagship and environmentally friendly iPhone 12 smartphone will soon be manufactured in India for local customers.
With the release of the iPhone SE in 2017, Apple began producing iPhones in India. Apple currently builds some of its most modern iPhones in India, including the XR, iPhone 11, and, most recently, the iPhone 12. Apple’s Indian suppliers are now using solar and wind energy to meet their demands.
