Randeep Hooda is removed as ambassador of UN’S environmental Treaty; over his joke against ‘Mayawati’

Following the controversy over his harsh remarks against Bahujan Samaj Party head Mayawati, actor Randeep Hooda has been removed as the ambassador of the Convention for the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS), the United Nations’ environmental treaty. Hooda has been under criticism when a nine-year-old video of him cracking a “joke” made headlines online on Wednesday, prompting social media users to call it casteist and sexist.

A Twitter user released a 43-second clip from a media company’s event in 2012. Hooda cracks a joke in the video, and the audience laughs with him.

CMS said in a statement on its website that the words in the video are “offensive,” and Hooda will no longer act as the organization’s ambassador. “The CMS Secretariat finds the statements made in the video to be offensive, and they do not reflect the CMS Secretariat’s or the United Nations’ ideals,” according to the statement.

Mr. Hooda is no longer a CMS ambassador, according to the statement. In February 2020, the actor was named the CMS Ambassador for Migratory Species for a three-year term.

While CMS is a United Nations treaty, the statement underlined that it is distinct from both the UN Secretariat and the UN Environment Programme, and Hooda’s role as a brand ambassador was limited to CMS.

The 44-year-old actor is getting a barrage of criticism, both online and offline, with many calling for him to apologise for his words about the former Uttar Pradesh chief minister. #ArrestRandeepHooda was trending on Twitter on Friday, as fans urged that the ‘Radhe’ actor should  face legal action.
