Bollywood films that were previously regarded as niche were able to break through at the box office, all thanks to the Chinese market.
In the last 7-8 years, the box office game has changed dramatically. Bollywood has broken many records not only in India, but also internationally. In China, we’ve seen the emergence of a new market that has made a significant contribution to Bollywood films. And it’s due to it that a number of small but content-driven films have done exceptionally well at the box office around the world. To name a couple, there’s Andhadhun, Hidden Superstar, and Padman.
Because of the Chinese market, Bollywood films that were previously considered niche received their due at the box office. Secret Superstar, which was overshadowed by Rohit Shetty’s Golmaal Again, is the best example that comes to mind. However, the figures on a global scale will make you pinch yourself. So let’s discuss this film one by one.
Padman – Although it was not a masterpiece, but this Akshay Kumar and Radhika Apte film had decent material. More than that, the subject was worth appreciation. The film’s material was targeted at a specific demographic, and it was marketed accordingly. It grossed 78.95 crores in India, but thanks to its success in China, the film grossed a total of 203.05 crores worldwide.
Hichki – Like Secret Superstar, Rani Mukerji’s Hichki is a huge surprise on the list. In India, the film, which had good content for children, grossed only 46.17 crores. Fortunately, it got a fantastic response in China. The total amount collected at the conclusion of the film’s global run was 210.81 crores.
Hindi Medium is a modern-day classic in Hindi. With Irrfan Khan and Saba Qamar in the lead roles, the film outperformed Half Girlfriend in India, grossing 69 crores. But it was China that propelled it to the next stage, with a total collection of 304.57 crores.
Secret Superstar – Secret Superstar, starring Zaira Wasim, is among the top three highest-grossing Bollywood films. No one could have predicted that a film that only made 62 crores in India will go on to make a global splash. It grossed a whopping amount of 902.92 crores thanks to good word-of-mouth.
Andhadhun – With Ayushmann Khurrana and Tabu in the lead roles, Andhadhun has become a cult classic. The film was a big success in India, grossing 72.50 crores. It also struck a chord with the Chinese people. It grossed 411.65 crores worldwide at the end of its run.
