ISRO Mangalyaan Captures Picture of Mars’ Largest Moon Phobos

The Indian Area Analysis Organisation (ISRO) on Friday shared a current picture of the mysterious moon of Mars, Phobos, as captured by the Mars Orbiter Mission often known as Mangalyaan. The picture was captured on July 1 by the Mars Color Digital camera.

Taking to Twitter, ISRO shared the picture and wrote, “A current picture of the mysterious moon of Mars, Phobos, as captured by India’s Mars Orbiter Mission.”

“Mars Color Digital camera (MCC) onboard Mars Orbiter Mission has imaged Phobos, the closest and largest moon of Mars, on July 1 when MOM was about 7,200 kilometres from Mars and at four,200 kilometres from Phobos,” ISRO stated.

“Phobos is basically believed to be made up of carbonaceous chondrites. The violent part that Phobos has encountered is seen within the massive part gouged out from a previous collision, (Stickney crater) and bouncing ejecta. Stickney, the most important crater on Phobos together with the opposite craters (Shklovsky, Roche and Grildrig) are additionally seen on this picture,” ISRO additional stated.

The mission was launched on November 5, 2013, by PSLV-C25, an expandable launch system, and entered the Martian orbit on September 24, 2014, in its first try.
